Cuba Plans to Approve Direct Flight from St. Petersburg

Authorities from Cuba and Russia are planning to approve the launch of a direct flight from St. Petersburg. This was announced on March 14 by Cuba's Minister of Tourism, Juan Carlos García Granda, who is currently visiting the Russian Federation.

"We are working to increase the number of flights connecting Russia and Cuba. We are also working to increase the number of Russian cities from which direct flights to Cuba are operated. As part of this visit, we plan to ensure that flights from St. Petersburg to Cuba are opened," the minister said at a press conference with TASS.

He noted that currently, aircraft flying from Russia to Cuba are filled to 94%. According to him, the three main destinations are Varadero, Cayo Coco, and Havana.

Since December 31, 2023, direct flights to Cuba to the island of Cayo Coco have been departing from Pulkovo. The flights are operated by Nordwind Airlines on a Boeing 777-200 aircraft with a capacity of 440 passengers.

From Sheremetyevo International Airport, flights between Moscow and Varadero, as well as Moscow and Havana, have been launched since last year.

It became known on May 19, 2023, that regular air traffic between Russia and Cuba is being resumed. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko stated that the resumption of aviation communication was carried out at the instruction of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasized that Cuba is a key partner of Russia in Central America.
