Passenger Screening Rules to be Tightened at Turkish Airports

Security personnel will now be able to check passengers' belongings both at the terminal entrance and at the boarding area, reports Habertürk TV channel.

On Thursday evening, the Turkish Parliament passed amendments to the Civil Aviation Law, tightening passenger screening procedures at airports, according to Habertürk TV.

The new rules will comply with the standards of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention). Security personnel will be able to inspect both personal luggage and electronic devices at the terminal entrance and at the boarding area. Passengers who refuse to have their belongings inspected will not be allowed into the airport or the departure area. Prohibited items will be confiscated on the spot.

Major airports in Turkey will have two screening points: at the entrance to the public area and in the so-called clean zone after check-in. These points will be equipped with modern equipment, and physical inspections will be conducted if necessary.

The amendments also introduce fines ranging from $620 to $15,600 for the flight crew's failure to report any legal violations on board during the flight. Operating a drone without permission or outside areas authorized by the Civil Aviation Authority will result in a fine of about $1,800.
