The Federal Air Transport Agency of Russia has expressed its readiness to consider requests from Malaysian airlines for direct flights between Russia and Malaysia, highlighting the interest of Russian airlines in such routes. This was stated by Sergey Vasilyev, Deputy Head of the Transport Regulation and International Cooperation Department of Rosaviatsia.
"Russian airlines are interested in operating flights to destinations in Malaysia. On behalf of the Federal Air Transport Agency, we are ready to consider requests from Malaysian airlines for flights between our countries," Vasilyev said at the international economic forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum."
Vasilyev noted that there are currently several obstacles to this plan. The first is the outdated legal framework governing air traffic between the two countries. "I believe it makes sense for the aviation authorities of both countries to discuss the possibilities for updating these agreements," he emphasized.
The second obstacle is the lack of ground maintenance facilities for Russian aircraft in Malaysian airports and the absence of guaranteed fuel supply. "The Russian Ministry of Transport approached the Malaysian aviation authorities on this issue in 2023, but we have not yet received a response. If our Malaysian colleagues can assist in resolving this matter, two Russian airlines are ready to commence flights with the support of tour operators and sufficient passenger load," Vasilyev highlighted.
